Community String Orchestra
Amelia Island Community String Orchestra
Fernandina Beach, Florida
Shelby Trevor, Director

Shelby Trevor founded a community orchestra in Amelia Island, FL, bringing amateurs, students, and professionals together to provide free concerts to the public. By fostering commonalities among diverse group members and focusing on a shared love for music, group members and audiences responded with receptivity, positivity, warmth and enthusiasm. The orchestra had a positive impact on the greater community, as students, their families, and growing audiences could share and appreciate the musical offerings. The orchestra performed four seasonal concerts annually, including holiday performances which took place at local senior housing centers. The group has discontinued due to the devastating social and economic impacts of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Rehearsals took place in his home living room. Shelby acted as the artistic director, facilitated orchestral education, managed rehearsal and performance venues, coordinated concert schedules, planned rehearsal schedules, selected program music for seasonal concerts, performed as the concertmaster and as soloist, managed the orchestra budget, designed flyers, advertisements, and programs, coordinated seating arrangements based on member ability, performed librarian duties, wrote program notes, and gave speeches to the audiences at every concert.
